2013 Tournament Recap
The 2013 Copper Cup Hockey Tournament saw 16 teams converge in Grand Rapids for the 10 year anniversary of the tournament on March 22 - 24, 2013. The spirited competition was only out-shined by the donations of the Home Depot, Forest Hills Financial, Howie's Hockey Tape, Quaker Steak and Lube, Brann's Restaurant and the Detroit Red Wings. Also a big thank-you to Mr. Tom Mehney and the staff of Patterson Ice Center, who have hosted the tournament for the past 10 years.
The Gentlemen's Division Championship pitted Summit FireHogs against KCLEA. In a very well played game, Summit emerged as the champs on a third period goal by Eric Bernard. Adam Lozen from Summit and Jim Svoboda from KCLEA both scored in the first period of the contest.
The B Division Championship saw the undefeated Michigan Police and Fire squaring off against Kensington Valley Pride. Matt Arnold, goaltender from Michigan Police and Fire, proved to be the MVP as he shutout Kensington Valley 2 - 0. Steve Hendricks and Travis Mallott scored for Michigan P & F.
The final game of day for the A Division Championship was a rematch from Friday night. Action Target, last year's champ, verses MSP. In a tightly contested game, MSP came out on top 3 - 1, with Geoff Collard scoring an empty netter to seal the victory. Matt York tallied for Action Target in the 2nd period and Matt Djerf and Jason Wickstrom both scored for MSP in the 3rd.
Thank-you to all the players who participated this year and for the past 10 years. Your generosity has made a difference for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan. I would also like to thank F/Lt. John Card, F/Lt. John Porter (ret) and Mr. Shannon Simon who donate their time to help make the tournament run as smoothly as it does.
